Sei network, originally built using the Cosmos SDK, has proposed a significant architectural shift through SIP-3 to deprecate CosmWasm and native Cosmos accounts in favor of an EVM-only model. This strategic pivot aims to reduce complexity for developers and users alike, while capitalizing on Ethereum’s dominant smart contract ecosystem.
The layer-1 blockchain had previously upgraded to Sei v2 with dual EVM and Cosmos support, successfully attracting DeFi developers. However, the current hybrid architecture requires users to manage multiple addresses and LINK functionalities, creating friction in the user experience. The proposed simplification comes as over 70% of all smart contracts continue to originate from Ethereum’s EVM environment.
